Morning Meeting

In room 34, we start everyday off with a morning meeting. It gives the class a chance to start the morning off on a positive note. Each week a student will be "President". The president is in charge of running the morning meeting.

Our meetings consists of:

*Daily Gratitude- written at their desk and put in the gratitude jar

*Greeting- a way for every kid to be seen and heard every morning.

*Weekly quote- Students discuss what the quote what mean and share any connections they have to it

*Question- fun or academic and kids can raise their hand and share an answer

*Closing- game, gratitudes or mindful moment

It makes such a powerful impact on the class and creates a positive classroom community!

What is going on in Room 34?!

The New Year is quickly approaching and we have been as busy as ever in room 34! We got through a week of indoor recess because of the fires (the kids were troopers! We have been lucky with the timing of the rain so we got outside lots last week! We have also been fortunate enough to have JJ's mom, Angela come teach brain engaging dancing with the kids every other week. The kids are loving it!

In Writer's Workshop...

We had a little creative free writing break and now we are diving into non-fiction writing. The kids will share a topic they are an expert on and teach others in the class about it!

In Reader's Workshop...

We wrapped up mystery books clubs and spent a week doing Junior Great Books. The children read short stories or folktales and then we had a discussion to share ideas and thoughts about the story. I was blown away by all that they could pull from the story and how they questioned the author's purpose.

This week we launch our "Reading to Learn" unit, we will be studying non-fiction books, pushing themselves to identify not only the main idea but pay attention to the underlying structure of the text.

In Math Workshop...

We introduced time last week and the kids had an opportunity to play time bingo. They learned about KenKen puzzles (you may have seen these in the Friday folder) and we worked on our math menus which the kids love! It is amazing what a little choice can do to push kids to learn!

This week we continue to master our multiplication facts with fun songs (ask your kiddos to sing them for you) and will start working on 3 digit addition problems.

In Science...

Mr. Westphal continues to work with the students studying adaptations!

We are loving our new PE specialist Mrs. Rodriguez for our Tuesday morning PE!

Thanks!
